The RON MOR

The RON MOR is a very stylish motor yacht owned by Mr. David Buckley whose homeport is Greystones harbour. She is, in fact, a Botnia Targa 30-footer built in Finland in 2008 by the long-established Finnish yard of Botnia Marin AB.

Botnia Targa models are renowned worldwide for their robust all-weather and sea-keeping abilities, and were originally designed as fishing or workboats. Some of this class of vessel are also used as police boats! The builders' focus on function and reliability has earned Targa motor yachts the nickname: THE FOUR-WHEELED DRIVE OF THE SEAS! The builders also have the following motto: TARGA TAKE YOU TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD AND HOME SAFELY!

I was attracted to this stylish motor yacht several years ago, and decided to paint her on the wall at the East Pier in March 2025, much to the delight of her proud owner, David, who visits the harbour quite regularly. It's quite amusing how he discovered that his RON MOR was featured in my gallery of murals on the pier. 

Apparently, several people from Greystones who were walking on the pier at the time, and who were familiar with his boat up in their marina, told him that his boat was featured on the wall. He then climbed up onto the pier, and was very impressed with my efforts. We have become good friends ever since, and I have since enjoyed several coastal tours from Wicklow in his motor yacht.

He informed me that the boat previously worked in Killybegs with fishermen for four years under a Swiss owner. David had a look at her when she was for sale and was very impressed with her good condition. He could not resist the temptation to buy her. He keeps her in remarkably good condition to this day.

She is capable of speeds from 8knots up to a max. speed of 35knots. It's the love of his life - not neglecting his wife and daughter, of course!

As well my mural of the RON MOR, I am also sharing here a few photos taken on New Year's Eve of 2025, as the RON MOR, skippered by David, was departing Wicklow Harbour, homeward bound for Greystones.

The PS WAVERLEY

  The PS WAVERLEY is the last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world.  She was named after Sir Walter Scott's first novel and was built in 1946 by A & J Inglis in Glasgow, Scotland to replace a PS WAVERLEY that was sunk in 1940 while helping to evacuate troops from Dunkirk. Bought in 1974 by a registered charity, the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society (PSPS), and following a successful public fund-raising appeal, she was restored to her original 1946 appearance to operate passenger excursions around the British coast. I recall how the vessel's owners decided to operate a short series of passenger tours in 1984 from Dublin port and docking at Wicklow Town, Arklow, and on one occasion onward to Rosslare. A shorter series of tours was conducted in 1985 when I decided to create a mural of the WAVERLEY on the East Pier. I included a Scottish flag in honour of the vessel's Scottish roots. The ELIANA

The Greek-registered cargo ship, the ELIANA was the first maritime mural painted on the old east pier. It was created by a crew member of the ship in 1971.  In 1976, I was requested by some local people to revive the piece as it had suffered deterioration. This was my first artwork on the pier. The ELIANA was a large vessel which regularly deliverd phosphate from Casablanca, Morocco to Wicklow Town harbour. This was used as a component for fertiliser that was produced in Arklow (the ELIANA being too large to birth there). I have fond boyhood memories of being allowed to play on the ship's decks and having my first 'foreign' meal there - spaghetti bollanaise!
