The ILEN

 


This is my mural of the ILEN, a sailing ketch originally built almost 100 years ago in 1926 - Ireland's last-built sailing ketch.

She moved to the Falkland Islands for a period of 70 years transporting farm animals between the islands.

On returning to Ireland in the late 1990s, she was restored to her original glory over a 10-year period in Hegarty's boatyard, Baltimore, west Co. Cork, and was completed in 2018. Today, she is part-used as a training vessel for young people.

She stopped over in Wicklow Harbour for a short visit on 28th / 29thJuly 2024 on route to Arklow.

  Hi everyone, For close on 50 years, I have been the resident artist of maritime murals on the East Pier of Wicklow Town Port in Ireland. The ELIANA

The Greek-registered cargo ship, the ELIANA, was the first maritime mural painted on the old East Pier. This vessel was built in 1946 at Turku, Finland under the name FINLANDIA which she held until 1967. She sported the name CARELIA until 1968, after which she became the ELIANA. Under this name, she was owned by Antonius Panagakos, from Athens, until 1972. Finally, she was scrapped under the name LEONI at Izmir, Turkey, in 1975. The ELIANA was a large vessel which regularly delivered phosphate from Casablanca, Morocco to Wicklow Town Port - reputedly colliding with the North Pier wall on one such visit! This was used as a component for fertiliser that was produced in Arklow (the ship being too large to berth there). The original mural was created by a crew member of the ship in 1971 around the time when the vessel was moored alongside the East Pier for repairs following her collision with the North Pier several days earlier. Tribute to Wicklow Seafarers

  Created in my signature circular mural style, my evocative painting on the East Pier is a tribute to all those seafarers who sailed from Wicklow Harbour and who never returned home. Specifically, it is dedicated to the crewmen of the schooner, the EVA (portrayed here off the Black Castle) on passage from Wicklow to Garston on the Mersey, who died at sea in foggy conditions off north Wales on 2nd July 1915.  Micheal Kinsealla master 35yrs, captain Thomas Kinsella (retired) mate 69yrs and Thomas Reilly able seaman 24yrs were all from Castle Street, Wicklow Town RIP. I was requested in 2023 by John McInnerney, originally from Wicklow Town, to engage in the making of a new mural dedicated to all local seafarers who lost their lives at sea. Passers-by have described viewing my mural as akin to looking through a telescope back into time.
